Book Review for Dirt Roads and Daydreams

Date: 06/21/2011 dirt roads and daydreams, southern books
This book is a wonderful collection of stories that define the author's soul. What I found particularly interesting is that his stories are also my stories... your stories. The names may be different, but there are so many aspects of this book that will touch you and remind you of a time in your life when things were simpler, relationships were overflowing with love and and family meant everything. I know you will find this book, like I did, compelling in its honesty and inspiring in its message. The author is obviously a masterful storyteller and he weaves the tapestry of his life in a way that reminds you of times gone by while also giving inspiration for the character traits that matter most. Thanks for taking the time to share this with the rest of us!

About Dave Brown, Author of Dirt Roads and Daydreams

In one scene in the movie Grumpier Old Men, Burgess Meredith rambles on and on for no apparent reason and then just stops mid-sentence and chuckles. After waiting a moment for Meredith to continue Jack Lemmon prompts him by saying, “So Dad, what’s your point”.  Meredith scoffs at him as he gleefully explains, “There ain’t any point… I just like telling stories”.

Okay, before you even consider opening a page in my book, it’s important to get this in your head. Hemingway or Grizzard, I ain’t. I’m no writer… I just like telling stories.

Fifteen years ago I was diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumor. I have been very fortunate and have survived what is usually a fatal diagnosis. I simply continue to live one day at a time, humbly thankful for the gift of continued life. I retired in the summer of 2008. I spent my first year of retirement reflecting on my life; and in the process identified five important things that have sustained me through the easy and not-so-easy times. Faith, family, friends, fun, and free enterprise… hmmm, lots of words that started with the letter “F”. I call them, “The Five F’s”. Brilliant, eh? In retrospect, it’s where I invested my life. That investment has yielded the invaluable return of priceless memories and the peace of mind and hope that my faith offers. Time, memories, and hope… do we really, truly own anything more precious?

Dirt Roads and Daydreams is a collection of true stories and reflections about my “Five F’s”. Heck, you’ll even meet and get to know our dog, Oreo and my old tomcat Evinrude. The underlying theme behind all of the stories you’ll read is how they’ve helped me through adversity, especially my battle with cancer, and defined who I am today. Through faith, patience and perseverance, my life has rebounded with happiness and contentment beyond my highest dreams.

In summary, I’m a storyteller. Here are a few. I hope at least one of them makes you smile.
